Psychiatric patients or patients suffering from mental disorders such as schizophrenia, dementia, depression and such other things need to be treated in places not similar to the ones in hospital wards or nursing homes. The environment needs to be slightly different and a serene one where the patient will not be impacted by physical stress, or environmental stress. In many cases, it has been found that the serene and calm environmental surroundings, the greenery and such other natural things have a great impact on cure and rehabilitation of the patient suffering from mental health disorders.
This environment or the setting for treatment for psychiatric patients is what, in nursing parlance, referred to as therapeutic milieu. In simple terms, therapeutic milieu refers to ideal environmental and hospital settings where the psychiatric patients, team of members taking care of the patients are available.
The milieu will be such a place where there will not be very less or no environmental stress. In other words, noise pollution and / or traffic chaos will not be present and the entire atmosphere will be very calm, thus avoiding the possibility of any noise stress on the patients receiving care and treatment. The milieu also will not have any physical stress. In other words, the absence of noise or confusion will pave for better and sound sleep for the patients and thus eliminate physical stress in patients.
Placing the patients in a serene atmosphere or environment, by freeing them from the noise stress or physical stress, is the first step in providing the opportunity for care and nurture to the patients. Interaction with the other patients, trying to do things that they are capable of doing without others help or assistance in that environment is also possible in the therapeutic milieu and will ultimately pave for growth of their self-confidence.
The interaction among the patients in a group behavior encourages the sharing of feelings and experiences among the patients having similar problems. This provides a unique opportunity for the psychiatric nurse to initiate a group therapy for the patients, taking into account the results of the assessment of the individual patients.
Unlike other environments that might have played a part in the mental disorder of a patient, the therapeutic milieu provides a non-punitive serene atmosphere where the only motto of the psychiatric nurse is the care of the patient. The therapeutic milieu where a number of patients reside, share and enjoy the feelings, confrontation among the patients becomes tolerable largely, and will have a major impact on the cure of the ailment or disorder. Acting independently along with other patients, getting feedback from the friends in the place will pave for the growth of the mind of the patients in the non-punitive therapeutic milieu. Feelings of suicide, or use of unsafe or dangerous items will not be possible in the therapeutic milieu because of the safety in the environment. This will be a welcome change of place for the patients with mental disorders and will play a vital role in calming their restless souls and helps finding solace, rediscovery.
